Avoid Unsafe, Uncertified Hoverboards

Avoid Unsafe, Uncertified Hoverboards

Hoverboards have begun to earn a tragic reputation for failing to measure up to fire and electrical safety standards. Amazon has stopped selling hoverboards and issued refunds to their customers who purchased a hoverboard from them. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), uncertified hoverboard products have resulted in more than 60 fires and thousands of injuries.

What’s Wrong with Uncertified Hoverboards & Scooters?

Whether it’s a hoverboard, a self-balancing scooter, or an electric scooter, all of these products run on a high-power battery (i.e., lithium-ion). It’s crucial that these batteries measure up to standards of electric and fire safety. When these batteries are not certified, they are not safe; and time after time, this has resulted in fires that cause serious damage.

Are There Safe Hoverboards To Buy?

As of today, 13 hoverboard companies are under investigation by the CPSC for failing to meet safety standards. However, there is one company that produces a self-balancing electric scooter which has been certified by Underwriters Labs (UL) for meeting fire and electrical safety standards – that company is Ninebot.

You may not immediately recognize the name, but Ninebot is the company that produces the Segway personal transporters. For more than a decade, Segway has been the world leader in electric personal transportation. These are just a few of Ninebot’s self-balancing personal transporters:

  • Segway I2 SE
  • Segway X2 SE
  • Ninebot PTR E+
  • Ninebot One E+

Trust a UL-Certified Self-Balancing Scooter

Ninebot knows that building a safe product is more than just “believing” that it is safe. That’s why it is the first company to create a self-balancing electric scooter that has been certified for UL 2272 standards of fire and electric safety: the miniPRO. Similar to the hoverboard, the Ninebot by Segway miniPRO is hands-free, two-wheeled, and operated by leaning and pivoting your body.

The miniPRO goes a step further than the hoverboard: instead of using unsteady foot pivoting to turn the self-balancing scooter, a precision knee control bar operates left-turn and right-turn functions. More importantly, it’s been tested to high standards of safety, and to minimize risks of battery fires.
